This new exhibition features 15 photographs and paintings by two members of the Andalusian International Artists Group will remain open until the 30th of July 2012.

 

Local Naturalist Dr Venom and Roger Cummiskey exhibit different techniques and styles, including wildlife photographs on canvas and oil paintings taking their themes and titles from the writings and wanderings of James Joyce.

 

The gallery owners congratulated the artists for the quality of the exhibits, and highlighted the good work being done by the AIA. “The artworks bring a fresh look for Summer. They are in complete contrast to each other and yet are in harmony. It promises to be a delightful exhibition.”

    Am I walking into eternity along Sandymount strand?

     

    Stephen Dedalus proceeds along the beach on Sandymount strand, cracking shells as he goes (echoing his recognition of the cycle of life in “seaspawn and seawrack”). Then he closes his eyes, wondering whether he is “walking into eternity,” and hears the rhythm of the sea, which he likens to an “acatalectic tetrameter of iambs marching. No, agallop: deline the mare.” He sees language in terms of reality, but he also seems to see the reality of language – language, itself, gallops even as it describes the galloping mare. He opens his eyes again, commanding himself to see anew.

  • Roger Cummiskey Am I Walking into Eternity along Sandymount Strand?

     

    The original watercolour painting is my interpretation of this expression of James Joyce’s (1882-1941) spoken by Stephen Dedalus as he wends his way from Dalkey towards Dublin in “Ulysses”.
    Sandymount Strand is tidal and when the tide goes out very far and one does not look to left or right one gets the feeling of total isolation with only the sky meeting the horizon in the far distance.

     

    In 1904 this whole area was quite bleak and appeared to go on forever. It still does!

    Dear Sir or Madam,

    It is a pleasure to be able to invite you to visit the Carmen Thyssen Museum and to our exclusive reception for international residents’ groups on the Costa del Sol.

    The arrival of this art collection in Malaga is one of the most important pieces of news in the cultural life of the province in the last ten years. Its success is contributing to a new image of our city and region that we hope will benefit everyone who lives here in both the national and international communities.

    The trustees of the museum know how vital the work of foreign residents is in our province. We are very aware of the initiatives of many associations, some specifically focused on culture, to stimulate relations between the different nationalities on the coast.

    Since the Museum opened, it has been our wish to strengthen contacts with the international communities so that this important collection enriches the lives of everyone that resides in our province.

    So what better time than now, as we celebrate our first anniversary, for Lourdes Moreno, Curator and me to invite you to a special event at the Museum, where we can meet you in person and offer you a tour of the collection and the building. In addition, we would like to use this reception as an opportunity to share opinions on the increasing cultural offer in our city and how we can best present it to international residents on the Costa del Sol.

    SWIM! DIP! PADDLE! READ!

    Join fellow Joyceans in Fuengirola for a Bloomsday Bathe on the Beach, followed by informal readings from Ulysses by James Joyce in English, Spanish, Swedish, Finnish or any language and a Continental Breakfast.

    This event will consist a non-intellectual, fun get together providing the opportunity to become fully immersed in – sea water.

    This event is FREE. You want to eat or drink? – That´s up to you!

     

    07.45: Beach assembly. In front of the Hotel Florida.

    08:00: Divest and dive into “the snot green scrotum tightening sea” – heated by the Spanish summer sunshine.

    08:30: Readings lead off by those present followed up by voluntary readings by like-minded female and male participants in their own language wearing varieties of various costumes, hats and beachwear.

    09:00- 9:30: Had enough? OK, then lets Swim, Dip or Paddle again before adjourning to a local Chiringito (La Cepa Playa) for toast, olive oil, coffee and chat.

     

    “Mr Leopold Bloom ate with relish the inner organs of beasts and fowls. He liked thick giblet soup, nutty gizzards, a stuffed roast heart, liverslices fried with crustcrumbs, fried hencods’ roes. Most of all he liked grilled mutton kidneys which gave to his palate a fine tang of faintly scented urine.” ― James Joyce, Ulysses.

    Bloomsday – June 16th – is an annual celebration among Joyce fans throughout the world, from Fuengirola to Melbourne. It is celebrated in at least sixty countries worldwide, but nowhere so imaginatively, of course, as in Dublin. The novel, Ulysses, by James Joyce recounts the hour-by-hour events of one day in Dublin – June 16, 1904 – as an ordinary Dubliner, Leopold Bloom, wends his way through the urban landscape, the odyssey of a modern-day Ulysses.

    A Stroll Through Ulysses: A 23-minute documentary filmed by Dublin film maker Noel Duffy celebrating the 100th anniversary of Bloom’s Day – June 16, 1904. The content was written, presented and narrated by Roger Cummiskey, a Dublin Artist.

    Diversión informal y reunión que proporcionara la oportunidad de divertirse y darse un chapuzón en el agua del mar.

    09:00-09:30: Suficiente? OK, entonces vamos a nadar, inmersión o paleta antes de marchar al Chiringuito (La Cepa Playa) para tostadas con aceite de oliva, café y charlar.

    Bloomsday – 16 de junio – es una celebración anual entre los fanáticos de Joyce en todo el mundo, desde Fuengirola a Melbourne. Se celebra en sesenta países alrededor del mundo, pero en ninguna parte tan imaginativamente, por supuesto, como en Dublín. La novela Ulises, de James Joyce, narra los acontecimientos hora a hora de un día en Dublín – 16 de junio de 1904 – como un ordinario Dubliner, Leopold Bloom, serpentea su camino a través del paisaje urbano, la odisea de un moderno Ulisses.

    Dubliners by James Joyce

     

     

    The Dublin of Joyce’s Dubliners is a very noisy place indeed – bells, calls, honks, whistles, prayer, clatter, bang, children crying, drunken roars and raucous laughter. But it is music that is central to the city soundscape. It is a city of opera and composers, of music hall and pantomime artistes, of music lessons, church choirs and organists, organ grinders and street harps.

     

     

    Song ” The brown and yellow ale” Luke Kelly. This song was one of Joyce’s favorite party pieces.

     

     

     

     

    What is your favorite story in this book?

     

    Dubliners is a collection of 15 short stories by James Joyce, first published in 1914. They were meant to be a naturalistic depiction of Irish middle class life in and around Dublin in the early years of the 20th century.

    The stories

    • The Sisters – After the priest Father Flynn dies, a young boy who was close to him and his family deal with it only superficially.
    • An Encounter – Two schoolboys playing truant encounter an elderly man.
    • Araby – A boy falls in love with the sister of his friend, but fails in his quest to buy her a worthy gift from the Araby bazaar.
    • Eveline – A young woman abandons her plans to leave Ireland with a sailor.
    • After the Race – College student Jimmy Doyle tries to fit in with his wealthy friends.
    • Two Gallants – Two con men, Lenehan and Corley, find a maid who is willing to steal from her employer.
    • The Boarding House – Mrs. Mooney successfully manoeuvres her daughter Polly into an upwardly mobile marriage with her lodger Mr. Doran.
    • A Little Cloud – Little Chandler‘s dinner with his old friend Ignatius Gallaher casts fresh light on his own failed literary dreams. The story reflects also on Chandler’s mood upon realizing his baby son has replaced him as the centre of his wife’s affections.
    • Counterparts – Farrington, a lumbering alcoholic scrivener, takes out his frustration in pubs and on his son Tom.
    • Clay – The old maid Maria, a laundress, celebrates Halloween with her former foster child Joe Donnelly and his family.
    • A Painful Case – Mr. Duffy rebuffs Mrs. Sinico, then four years later realizes he has condemned her to loneliness and death.
    • Ivy Day in the Committee Room – Minor politicians fail to live up to the memory of Charles Stewart Parnell.
    • A Mother – Mrs. Kearney tries to win a place of pride for her daughter, Kathleen, in the Irish cultural movement, by starring her in a series of concerts, but ultimately fails.
    • Grace – After Mr. Kernan injures himself falling down the stairs in a bar, his friends try to reform him through Catholicism.
    • The Dead – Gabriel Conroy attends a party, and later, as he speaks with his wife, has an epiphany about the nature of life and death. At 15–16,000 words this story has also been classified as a novella. The Dead was adapted into a film by John Huston, written for the screen by his son Tony and starring his daughter Anjelica as Mrs. Conroy.

    Diana Worthy is English and Roger Ayala Perez is Cuban. They exhibit new artworks at restaurante Galeria LUCIA in Fuengirola.

     

    Diana and Roger are members of the AIA - Artistas Internacionales en Andalucía.

    Diana works with alpaca fleece/fibre to produce unique art forms. Roger has a naive style using figures with elongated necks and butterflies.
