Mr Leopold Poldy Bloom from James Joyce´s novel Ulysses.

Blue Bloom is an oil painting on canvas measuring 50 x 70 cm.

Bloomsday takes its name from him. 16th June.

And now Mr Bloom goes to America!

Mr. Bloom

Bloomsday – June 16th – is an annual celebration among James Joyce fans throughout the world, from Fort Lauderdale to Melbourne. It is celebrated in at least sixty countries worldwide, but nowhere so imaginatively, of course, as in Dublin, Ireland where Joyce was born and about which he wrote extensively.

The novel, Ulysses, by James Joyce recounts the hour-by-hour events of one day in Dublin – June 16, 1904 - as an ordinary Dubliner, Leopold Bloom, wends his way through the urban landscape, the odyssey of a modern-day Ulysses. This year celebrates the 108th anniversary.

Dedicated and not so dedicated followers of James Joyce and his writings have some fun on Bloomsday – which now can stretch to Blooms week – dressing up in garb of the period, reading passages from Ulysses, knocking back copious amounts of alcohol and chatting about probably one of the best known novels in the World, few people have read and many not understood! Daft but fun!

This painting by Roger Cummiskey is from James Joyce’s caricature of Leopold Bloom, drawn in Myron Nutting’s studio in the 1920’s.

Touch me. Soft eyes. Soft soft soft hand. I am lonely here. O, touch me soon, now. What is that world known to all men? I am quiet here alone. Sad too. Touch, touch me.    Ch 3 Ulysses (Proteus).

AIA Artists at Over 50s Show

The AIA-Group are displaying their new works at the Over 50’s Show at the Palacio de Congressos y Exposiciones, (Exhibition and Conference Centre), Estepona between the 26 and 27 November – Saturday and Sunday, 11-am to 6 pm daily.

The AIA group is privileged to display at the Over 50s Show for the fifth year running and are to be located near the entrance way to the main exhibition area.

Close collaboration with the Andalusian International Artists Group has resulted in thirteen of their members’ work being selected for this prestigious show.

The artists are Diana Worthy, Richard Wood, Gordon Haslett from the UK; Roger Cummiskey, Dolores Cummiskey, Philip Magee, & John Low (AIA guest) from Ireland; Mette B Madsen from Denmark; Eleazar Galea from Malta; Arcadio Cabrera and Roger Rodriguez Ayala from Cuba; Enrique Linaza and Juan Cruz Plaza from Spain.

Exhibition organizer John Low said, “I am delighted with the very professional approach from the AIA group and believe that their artists will substantially contribute to the success of this popular annual exhibition. The artworks on display are all of very different subject matters but all with the same aim which is to reflect on the artist’s view of the world, sometimes entering into the realms of fantasy”.

The AIA-Group was formed seven years ago by professional and dedicated visual artists from around the world who are all living and working in Andalucia. The Group’s objectives are to encourage members to promote their work, enhance their knowledge, assist them in their careers and to promote the best standards as artists between people form diverse backgrounds.

A new high quality exhibition features 10 works by two members of the Andalusian International Artists Group which commences on 01st November and will remain open until the 28th of November.

Roger Cummiskey from Ireland and Mijas Costa and Roger Rodriguez Ayala from Cuba, exhibit different techniques and styles, including oil and acrylic on canvas, watercolors and ink on paper.

The exhibition takes place at the galería of restaurante LUCIA, Calle Maestra Angles Aspiazu, 17, Fuengirola, Malaga, Spain – up the road from the three horse fountain.

The gallery owners congratulated the artists for the quality of the exhibits, and highlighted the good work being done by the AIA. “The artworks bring a fresh look for Autumn. They are in complete contrast to each other and yet are in harmony. It promises to be a delightful exhibition.”

The AIA-Group was formed seven years ago by professional and dedicated visual artists from around the World, and is based in Andalucía. Further information is available from the AIA web site www.aia-artgroup.com or the Chairman at 952592652.

Roger Rodriguez Ayala was born in Pinar del Rio in Cuba in 1957. He graduated from La Facultad de Arte y Letras de la Universidad de La Habana.

Critics describe his art as naive, calm and full of tenderness, an important message for peace. In his world of art there is a great message of love with a very deep sense of innocence. Beauty and humanity shine through.

The paintings of expressive faces contain a duality of joy and sorrow, of light and dark, day and night, moon and sun, man and woman etc. Several of the paintings express a silent melancholy or you could say thoughtfulness, pensiveness, awareness or whatever pops up, while you are having your conversations with the faces.

Ayala is a new member of the AIA. This is his first exhibition with the group.

Roger Cummiskey was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1944. He studied art at the National Collage for Art and Design in Dublin and has exhibited extensively around the World representing Ireland at the Florence Biennale and in International exhibitions in Stockholm, London and New York.

Cummiskey´s paintings take their themes and titles from the wanderings and writings of James Joyce, Samuel Beckett and Miguel de Cervantes.

Cummiskey is chairman of the AIA and also a founder member.

This Exhibition is supported by Blevins Franks, Financial Advisors.

Add, Subtract, Divide, Multiply.

Add, Subtract, Divide, Multiply.

Medium: Pencil, watercolour and acrylic on paper.

Size: 21 x 31 cm (08.50 x 12.25 in)

Pencil, watercolour and acrylic finished in Arabesque style following in the footsteps of Picasso´s illustration of Le Chant des Morts. – The Song of the Dead.

On a recent visit to Israel (2011) I was struck by the simplicity of some of the drawings that I observed and as I thought about it I decided that what more simple than Add, Subtract, Divide and Multiply – every childs first school recollections.

I had already finished the first ten lines of a poem that I wrote in 1998 using the style adapted by Picasso for Le Chant des morts and felt that the use of similar designs to these again would be appropriate to set off this new small series of four drawings.

The drawings are made on Indian hand made uneven deckled paper with overall dimensions of  of 21 x 31 cm or 08.50 x 12.25 in.

I completed the images on 8th October 2011.

Style background:

Le Chant des morts, 1948
Author: Pierre Reverdy (1889-1960
Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)
Published: Paris, Tériade, 1948

During World War II, Reverdy started work on 43 sombre poems that he called Le chant des morts: The Song of the Dead. In January 1945 his handwritten text was reproduced actual size, including corrections and strikethroughs. Picasso was asked to illustrate the text. He first considered traditional line drawings, but they ultimately became arabesques in swift brushstrokes. Lines, knots and dots were given a place between – and around – the text.

These illustrations were produced in 1947 and 1948 on zinc plates. The production took a long time, so the zinc plates began to rust, which forced Picasso to start all over again. In that period he mostly occupied himself with decorating pottery – the famous Picasso vases and plates – working on Le chant des morts between two such ceramics sessions. He produced as many as 125 drawings on zinc plates within a few days: the largest number of illustrations he ever produced for any book. With these dynamic, red arabesques, the book sets itself apart from the other, more figurative Picasso books.

Picasso had known Reverdy since 1910, and probably met the publisher in 1926.

Le chant de morts was published by Tériade, a Greek whose real name was Eleftratios Tériades. He was one of the most prominent publishers of artists’ books, publishing the famous magazine Verve, among others, and collaborating with Matisse, Chagall, Léger and Miró. Innovation was important to Tériade; he produced very colourful books at a time when black-and-white lithographs were most common, and released books in extremely large sizes. He was also one of the first to reproduce handwritten texts as lithographs. His collaboration with Picasso remained limited to this title, but the book is still regarded as one of the most striking entries in Tériades’ list of publications (along with Jazz by Matisse). The balance between Reverdy’s calligraphy and Picasso’s blood-red arabesques was characterised by the publisher as follows:
‘It is as though they are having a conversation.’
